I was there That’s entertainment

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - The Way We Were -

I got to know the streets of Woolwich in my days as a young reporter on Westminster Press’ South East London Mercury in the early 1970s. Woolwich Polytechnic was a good place to catch bands and I remember enjoying The Pirates – Mick Green, Frank Farley and Johnny Spence – with their no-nonsense rock style.

I passed my driving test at nearby Erith in 1978 but have no recollections of driving my Morris Minor 1000 (pictured left) around Woolwich.

After moving out of London in 1981, I made regular visits to see friends living at Charlton, and on one such occasion went to see comedians Hale and Pace at Woolwich Tram Shed, before they found success with their ITV sketch show.
