Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - The Way We Were -

Having been launched in May 1990, the Rover Metro certainly had a highly successful 1991. It won the What Car Car of The Year award while the Rover Group was joint winner of the prestigious Fellowship of Engineering Award for its new Rover Metro.

The engineering award was presented by HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to John Towers, Rover Group’s managing director, product supply and the members of the Metro design and development team.

The Fellowship made the Rover Group joint winner for ‘the innovative design, development and manufacture of the new Metro which incorporates two principal engineering features: the new Rover K-series engine and the Moulton Hydragas interconnected suspension system.

‘The evaluation committee was also impressed by the innovations demonstrated in the composition and management of the dedicated Rover team created to design, develop, manufacture and, in particular, the aluminium foundry practices and the engineering features of the vehicle itself.’
