Cover star esprit for sale
This 1992 Lotus Esprit Turbo SE High Wing – one of two factory press cars – will be auctioned on 18 June. It has 59,000 miles on the clock and is estimated to sell for between £22,000 and £26,000.
The Lotus is one of just 64 High Wing models made, and as a press car it starred on numerous magazine covers in the early 1990s. It was then bought by the current seller, a Lotus addict who appears to have kept the SE in excellent condition. It comes with an MoT and a Lotus certificate of vehicle provenance.
The High Wing SE was a short-lived model, with Lotus valiantly trying to hold up sales until the S4 arrived in 1993. The wing increased stability and allowed the Esprit to hit 165mph, but possibly more important from the driver’s point of view was the increase in cabin space over the previous model.
The Lotus will be auctioned by Classic Car Auctions (CCA) at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre, Leamington Spa. Guy Lees-Milne, general manager at CCA, says: ‘We’re huge fans of the Lotus Esprit, which perfectly encapsulates Colin Chapman’s philosophy “simplify, then add lightness”, in a supercar package.’
