It would be lovely to have a summer of best-quality early 1960s Rootes motoring. I’ve really got into Series I Humber Sceptres of late but that might be pushing our budget. However an extremely nice example of sister vehicle the Hillman Super Minx could easily be snapped up with enough left over for a tube of sun cream. And, if we ate our greens and didn’t say naughty things about anyone, fate might just place a convertible variant in the driveway.
Originally meant to succeed the best-selling Minx, the ‘Super’ ended up being a bigger, heavier model in its own right. The cars are loaded with Rootes charm and quality, they look great, have lots of musical gear whine as a proper classic should, and are lovely to enjoy. All models are capable of reasonable performance and handle surprisingly well.
All this makes a great package, and there was even a rare estate car. Ah, the smell of a hot Rootes interior on a sunny day. A Mega, never mind a ‘Super ‘Minx!
