PORSCHE 944

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Summer of Classic Love -

The phrase ‘no-brainer’ is over-used and lazily applied to the point where it’s become almost meaningless.

But this one of the few cases where it’s justified. There are plenty of 944s out there for under £5k – and they really are a no-brainer when it comes to the amount of power, poise and reliability they offer for the money.

You might think with it only being a four-pot and stretched to 2.5-litres it’s bound to lack refinement, right? Wrong, it’s essentially half of the technological tour-de-force that was the V8 fitted in the 928. It also looks great and it’s beautifully screwed together, and while 944 prices have been quietly creeping up there are still plenty around for our £5k budget.

Actually, I’d cheat and save up a bit more for the 944 Turbo S – the normally-aspirated 944 is a great car, but it’s hard to resist the prospect of 250bhp in a package that marries supercar-rivalling heave with goodies like electric leather seats and air-con.

In a market where the underpowered 914 and the ‘No, actually it’s not a 911…’ 912 can command big money, I’d grab one while you can.
