DaViD siMisTer TRIUMPH SPITFIRE

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Summer of Classic Love -

Enjoying summer is all about zipping from bend to bend on a sun-kissed B-road, preferably en-route to a car show or a quiet pint at a country pub. For £5k there’s nothing better suited to the task than a Spitfire.

Everything about it, from its delicate Michelottipenned proportions to the excitable buzz of its fourpot engine screams fun, and that’s before you get into the livewire sensations you get when driving it. It darts through the corners and the stubby gearlever has a short, decisive throw that encourages you to have fun with it. It’s also perfectly sized for making the most of Britain’s country lanes.

There are plenty of Spitfires under our £5k budget, you can by just about every part imaginable off the shelf from specialists, and there’s a thriving club scene backing them up. At this sort of money it’s more likely to be one of the later 1500 models that ends up on your driveway but that’s no bad thing – they’re still great fun to drive, and they’re a bit quicker than the earlier iterations.
