Club’s subs ‘nightmare’
A major club is reviewing its policies after 80 people inadvertantly ended up paying for membership twice.
Secretary of the 1164-member Austin A30-A35 Owners’ Club, Harry Douglas described the situation, as ‘a total nightmare’, The club had started to accept payments by PayPal last November, and advised members there would be membership renewal forms in two issues of the club magazine.
‘This seems to have confused the membership,’ he says. Matters were not helped by the magazine’s printer putting an out-ofdate membership form in the second issue.
‘The printer did try to correct its mistake by sending out another reminder at its expense, but as no explanation was included as requested this further compounded the confusion,’ Harry
says. ‘This third form was sent to all members, including those who had already paid. I got my first person paying twice in January. Members who had used the PayPal option paid again.’
One member even paid three times, cash at the NEC, PayPal in January and a cheque in February. Others sent a cheque both months and eventually Harry received some 80 unnecessary payments.
‘This was most unfiortunate,’ he says. ‘We have advised members about it and reimbursed them as appropriate. Steps are in place to ensure this will never happen again. Nick Larkin
