In MkII form, the hottest supermini from Ford was a huge seller. And yet, very few survivors remain, which means – allied with huge nostalgia – these cars are now very costly to buy if you’re after a good one. Fun to drive – a nice rollerskate, and easy to run. Watch for rust!
FORD FIESTA XR2
Even rarer than the Fiesta, thanks to the legions of Mini owners who cannibalised rusty Turbos to make their cars go faster. Great to drive, especially fun with the gearbox whine, combined with turbocharger whine for a magical soundtrack. Boisterous, raucous, but a laugh on B-roads.
