Help trace history of Chris Barber Lotus
The makers of TV show For The Love of Cars are asking for your help in tracing the history of one of the next series’ star cars.
One of the cars Philip Glenister and Ant Anstead will be focusing on in the third series – due to be screened by Channel 4 this autumn – is a 1958 Lotus Elite originally owned by jazz musician Chris Barber. It was raced extensively by Sir John Whitmore and Mike Beckworth, but in 1965 its original Coventry Climax engine was removed and fitted to a Marcos racing car.
The series’ car producer – and CCW contributor – John Lakey says he’s looking for any information about events the car competed in between 1958 and 1963.
‘Any history on where it raced and when will help us look for archive film of the car with its owner Chris Barber, as archive libraries such as Pathé catalogue events by date. We have a list but we don’t believe it to be complete,’ he says.
‘If any CCW readers have old programmes or other records from international or domestic meetings in that era, have a look to see if an Elite is entered under the name of a certain C Barber. It’s a fascinating car and I know Ant, Philip and the rest of the For the Love of Cars team are very excited about being involved with this car and uncovering its unique history.’
