AN OPEN AND SHUT CASE

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Your Letters -

I have always keenly followed Gillian Carmoodie’s exploits with Henry the Standard 8 as I have the same model.

I was therefore interested in your ‘Letter of the Week’ in the 15 June issue. The 8 had a facelift in March 1957 and received an aluminium grille over its previously open aperture, an uprated Gold Star and the opening boot lid. Before this, in 1955, the Family 10 model was introduced to the range using the 8 bodyshell without the bootlid.

I well remember a show at Malvern a few years ago where the only members of the 8 and 10 range present were my 8 and a Family 10. I heard a visitor tell his companion: ‘Of course, it’s easy enough to tell an 8 from a 10. The 8 doesn’t have an opening boot and the 10 does.’ The looks on their faces were a sight to behold as they looked at the badges and scratched their heads! Peter Lockley, Southam, Warks
