In the news: 4-minute milestone

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - The Way We Were -

On the 6 May, at the Oxford University’s Iffley Road track, Dr Roger Bannister became the first person to break the fourminute mile. High winds of up to 25mph led Bannister to consider postponing his bid before the event but a break in the weather allowed the race to start at the scheduled time of 6pm. And three minutes, 59.4 seconds later, the stadium commentator Norris McWhirter made the historic announcement – ‘First, number 41, RG Bannister, Amateur Athletic Association and formerly of Exeter and Merton Colleges, Oxford, with a time which is a new meeting and track record, and which – subject to ratification – will be a new English Native, British National, All-Comers, European, British Empire and World Record.’
