16 RESTORED BEAUTIES AT 924’S BIRTHDAY D0
The Porsche Centre network was challenged with sourcing and restoring a classic transaxle model. Here are the finalists that could be yours to buy
Porsche fans were spoilt by a display of 16 of the manufacturer’s frontengined ‘transaxle’ classics – all of which had been meticulously restored by its UK dealers.
They were finalists in the ‘40 years at the front’, a competition which celebrates the anniversary of the first front engined Porsche, the 924.
In 2015, Porsche Centres around the UK were challenged with restoring a 924, 928, 944 or 968 model in conjunction with their recommended body repairer. Marked on ‘quality and extent’ of the work undertaken the original cars were sourced and purchased in various states of disrepair. The 16 centres then set to work to find replacement parts and restore the Porsches.
Many of the Porsche Centres have supported the use of apprentices to aid in the restoration of the cars.
Each of the vehicles is set to go on sale at their respective Porsche Centres around the UK.
James Toye of Porsche Cars Great Britain says: ‘ We’re trying to build the skills set for the next generation as it’s important to inspire them and help them grow. The technical experts would oversee their work from a stripped down 924 to the final stage of restoration’.
Porsche Centre Guildford and its Porsche recommended repairer, Premier Panel Skills, were crowned the overall winner with a superb restoration of a 968 Club Sport.
Company director Ian Wallis says: ‘I first saw this car and met its owner, Derrick Brocklehurst, more than 10 years ago. He had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and announced his wish to drive the Nordschleife in it. I and others from Porsche Centre Guildford helped him achieve that.’
After Derrick’s death the car sat unused and after a chance conversation with one of Derrick’s relatives Ian decided it would be a fitting tribute to a determined and resourceful man if he could trace his car and see how it had fared in the intervening years.
Ian adds: ‘Sadly the years had not been kind and much work was required to restore it to its former glory. Having found the car I bought it on the spot and brought back to our premises for a full restoration. We had two apprentices also helping and thanks to many of Derrick’s friends we managed to aquire many of the car’s original parts which had been removed over the years.’
This 968 is now for sale at the Porsche Centre Guildford.
This 1994 968 Club Sport was stripped down and completely rebuilt by Porsche’s experts in Guildford earlier this year.
One of 74 made, this 1988 924 S Le Mans Edition was a project just for the apprentices at Porsche’s Swindon centre.
