ANNUAL VBOA RALLY MOVES TO NEW HOME
Vauxhall Bedford Opel Association rally switches to Market Harborough
ne of the UK’s biggest classic events is moving forward into 2017 after a new venue has been found.
Some 3000 cars and commercials and 5000 spectators are expected at the Vauxhall Bedford Opel Association’s rally, which will now take place at the new Market Harborough Showground in Leicestershire on 8-9 July.
The news ends months of uncertainty for the 32 clubs involved with the event after the VBOA event was evicted from its previous venue, Billing Aquadrome, after 33 years exhibiting there. Other major shows like The Land Rover Show have also had to move.
‘We are so glad that this new venue has been found. We had looked at others, including Luton Hoo and the East of England Showground but this new showground is ideal,’ says VBOA spokesman John Ankerman.
He adds: ‘We are not happy with the way we were treated by Billing – basically we only got a phone call shortly after the 2016 event followed by a single letter.’
John says that he is particularly grateful to Market Harborough-based Vauxhall specialist LMF, which found the venue, and is also organising the event on behalf of the VBOA.
Steve Crook at LMF says: ‘We’ve had a stand at the event for many years. It’s a great show and we are delighted to be able to help it continue.’
Clubs are also pleased that the VBOA event has a secure future. ‘ This is good news. We always have a great selection of cars at the event and we are looking forward to the 2017 show,’ says Vauxhall Cresta Club secretary and treasurer, Wendy Hogarth.
Vauxhall is a long-term supporter of the event with a stand featuring new and classic models. Spokesman Simon Hucknall says: ‘We are delighted to learn that a suitable new venue for the event has been found and look forward to continue supporting it.’
Despite numerous attempts to contact Billing Aquadrome for comment, no-one from the venue was available to before this week’s issue went to press.
