Corrosion is the chief killer of these cars. Look out for it on the sills, wings, floor­pans, out­rig­gers, whee­larches and boot floors – if you find any, it’ll keep you busy for a while.

En­gines are long-lived and strong but 60 years on can suf­fer bear­ing, crank­shaft and other wear. Check it breathes prop­erly, too.

The front sus­pen­sion needs reg­u­lar greas­ing, other­wise it’ll wear rapidly. Give the en­tire sys­tem a good look-over for signs of ne­glect and make sure the wish­bones aren’t cor­roded.
