Both models are grand tourers par excellence, and identical numbers were sold in last year’s second half. The Jaguar scores when it comes to soul, the Benz gets top marks when it comes to build quality. The Jaguar trumps the Benz when it comes to engines, the Edward Turner-designed V12 being a true masterpiece (the six cylinder models aren’t that far behind and are much more economical) while the SL’s engines do the job supremely well, but are down on ultimate refinement. XJS convertible values have firmed up lately, and it’s the same with super-condition SLs, whatever their engine size. As always, avoid rust-ridden cars. ONE THAT SOLD 1989 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL £13,230 (ACA)
