Battle of the wipers

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - This Week -

I read with interest Fuzz Townshend’s technical article in CCW (18 January) about how windscreen wipers work, but there was something about it that didn’t seem right in my experience.

In the 1960s I had a Ford Anglia 100E with windscreen wipers that worked off the vacuum, as Fuzz correctly stated. They were okay in fine rain, but absolutely terrible in heavy rain and worked in completely the opposite way to how Fuzz described.

When accelerating, they slowed dramatically, meaning you had to take the load off the engine in order for them to speed up again.

I am sure that a lot of your readers who owned early Fords will have a similar story to tell. Paul Scotten, King’s Lynn, Norfolk
