Simon Wood bought his Escort 1600 Ghia auto four years ago and straightaway wanted it to be a lot more fun to drive, so he’s incorporated a raft of upgrades. ‘I’ve fitted a 2.0-litre Zetec engine and an uprated exhaust system to allow it to breathe better and improve the sound it makes. The flywheel has been redrilled to take a Pinto clutch and there’s a Sierra five-speed gearbox for reliability and more relaxed cruising. Fitting a bias pedal box and removing the servo has tidied up the engine bay – it works out cheaper and the brakes still work well. The car is also lowered all round and has Gaz Gold inserts plus poly-bushed suspension, so it handles well too.’
