WHY I LOVE MY SMART

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Buying & Selling - VINCE CONNOR

Vince has run his very early Smart for a little under a year. Despite being almost pre-production, the car has been reliable. He says: ‘Very little has gone wrong with it – it’s not got the best history, but appeared to have been cared for and has had work on the clutch and semi-auto system in the past. Chassis number 647 is probably the oldest Smart in the UK, and the main problem I’ve found has been how awkward it is to change the spark plugs – everything else has held up well. It’s pleasant to drive, too.’ Any doubts about the safety of the small car were soon forgotten. ‘It remained completely stable after a rear tyre blowout on the motorway, though the lack of a spare was a pain.’
