1 Lower the flip-front bon­net/ wings to check for hid­den cor­ro­sion, in­clud­ing on the in­ner and outer sills, wings and ar­eas around the head­lights. The front chas­sis cross­mem­ber also sup­ports the bon­net boxes, so rot here is bad news.

2 Oc­ca­sion­ally get­ting noth­ing more than a dull ‘ur­rrrr’ sound when you turn the ig­ni­tion key – or worse, just the click of a so­le­noid – sug­gests that the starter mo­tor is prob­a­bly on its way out. New ones are read­ily avail­able.

3 A noisy gear­box can in­di­cate worn bear­ings, gear teeth or thrust wash­ers – and play in the clutch pedal can be symp­to­matic of a failed slave or master cylin­der.
