SPITFIRE BUYING TIPS
1 Lower the flip-front bonnet/ wings to check for hidden corrosion, including on the inner and outer sills, wings and areas around the headlights. The front chassis crossmember also supports the bonnet boxes, so rot here is bad news.
2 Occasionally getting nothing more than a dull ‘urrrrr’ sound when you turn the ignition key – or worse, just the click of a solenoid – suggests that the starter motor is probably on its way out. New ones are readily available.
3 A noisy gearbox can indicate worn bearings, gear teeth or thrust washers – and play in the clutch pedal can be symptomatic of a failed slave or master cylinder.
