Audacious Austin re-creation tour
A group of enthusiasts are to replicate an audacious road trip challenge made by the Austin Motor Company to commemorate its 70th anniversary.
They are planning to drive an Austin Sixteen 2500 miles across Europe, taking in seven capital cities in seven days. The challenge was set by Austin in March 1947: the Longbridge firm tasked the crews of three Austin Sixteen cars with successfully completing the mission in time to arrive for the opening of the first post-war Geneva Motor Show.
Participants in 2017’s trip include Practical Classics editor Danny Hopkins and CCW contributor Steve Berry.
A special Facebook page for the event has been created by Hopkins, and will feature the restoration of the car that he’ll be using on the trip. He says: ‘I’m really looking forward to following the progress of this one!’
