1984 ALFA ROMEO SPRINT GREEN CLOVERLEAF
WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?
This Sprint has only covered 70,000 miles and, once warmed up, the 1490cc engine pulls well. Acceleration is brisk, with a healthy engine note. The biting point on the clutch is quite high, but changing through the five-speed manual gearbox is easy. The brakes bring the Sprint to a clean, straight stop without any judder or pull to either side, while the suspension does its job without any adverse noises. Despite no power assistance and a fair amount of torque steer to contend with, the Alfa’s handling remains balanced and free from play.
The bodywork is in very good condition. It is completely free from paint chips or scratches and enhanced by bright green sporting trim and Cloverleaf inserts. There are a few faint white marks on the outer sunroof rubber and a slight crack to the rear side window rubber on the driver’s side, but these can both be easily addressed. The driver’s door trim rubber requires attention, being slightly warped and misshapen, most likely due to age. However, the glass and all other rubbers around the car are free from cracks and as new, as are the black plastic front and rear bumpers, wipers, badges, door handles and grille. The silver Speedline wheels are unmarked and this Sprint has standard tyres, as opposed to more costly metric alternatives and a healthy tread level is present on them.
HOW’S THE INTERIOR?
The interior of this Sprint Cloverleaf is particularly striking with its offering of bright snooker-table green carpet and black cloth seats with green diamond detailing. All interior dials work perfectly. There is some evidence of damp having been in the cabin at some point, with some grey mould spots evident on the back of the sun visors, but this should clean up easily. The door mirror adjuster on the driver’s side lacks its black plastic cover but otherwise this Alfa’s interior appears to be complete.
UNDER THE BONNET
The engine bay is clean, tidy and free from rust and corrosion, and the engine is keen to fire into life whether cold or warm. All fluids are at maximum levels with no signs of leakage. The pipes and wires remain in good health and the electrics are in fine working order. The original service book is stamped up to 69,800 miles (in 2010) and the car comes with its original handbook.
THE CCW VIEW
This Alfa would be well suited to an enthusiast who will appreciate its superb handling, addictive engine note and bold design. A Sprint Cloverleaf in this condition is now a rare but a stylish commodity. You’ll need to be savvy with the rustproofing to keep it clean and solid, however.
