A RECORD RACE RETRO
Silverstone’s three-day sale generates £5.7 million
Silverstone held its competition cars sale on the first day at Race Retro, with other classics and automobilia spread across the following two. The result was the most successful ever at the show, with 76 per cent of cars sold, to the tune of £5.7 million.
While Race Retro would seem ideally suited to the competition cars selection, it clearly worked with the ‘regular’ classics too. There were plenty of Ferraris, Jaguars, Porsches and BMWs, but there were other tempters for fired-up bidders. The accolade for the top price paid went to a 1974 Ferrari Dino 246GT that made £439,875. A restored Range Rover CSK was something a bit special, as was a low-mileage 1966 VW Beetle 1300 that had spent much of its life on Guernsey, while a Ford Escort RS Turbo continued the auctioneer’s successful relationship with performance Fords.
A 1939 Bentley Russ-Turner special had a wonderful history – Silverstone doesn’t offer many prewar cars, but this notable offering unsurprisingly generated plenty of interest on the day.
Its next sale is at Silverstone Circuit on 13 May. 01926 691141 www.silverstoneauctions.com
