To view the 1800ES as Sweden’s answer to the Reliant Scimitar GTE is to miss the point entirely. They may have similar basic design principles, but where the Reliant excites with its rorty V6 engine, the Volvo is more of a long-legged cruiser than it is an out-and-out sports car. It looks wonderful, has enough interior space to swallow four adults – and their luggage – on long-distance adventures, and mechanicals rugged enough to cope with just about anything you can throw at it. The handling may not be exciting, but add in prices that considerably undercut those of its older coupé sibling – this on a much rarer car – and you’re left with a classic that’s as compelling as it is practical. We’d recommend a well looked-after example to anyone.
