Five dif­fer­ent en­gine fam­i­lies were fit­ted to the Mae­stro dur­ing its life­time, kick­ing off with the sin­gle­carb 1275cc A-Se­ries. Next came the 1.6-litre R-Se­ries which gave way to the 1.6 S-Se­ries in May 1984. A fu­elin­jected 2.0-litre O-Se­ries pow­er­plant was fit­ted to the MG Mae­stro and from 1990 a 2.0-litre O-Se­ries diesel lump was avail­able; the lat­ter is agri­cul­tural but very tough, al­though you need to check for ev­i­dence of head gas­ket fail­ure.
