Reference the 1966 photo of the Hillman Minx (CCW, 8 March), I too remember Church Street and L&P Motors in Burn Road, because my dad used the cash ‘n’ carry behind it.

My grandad bought a green Hillman Minx in 1966, so my dad also bought a Super Minx in November ’66 (Alabaster Grey with a green stripe) from a Sunderland garage.

He kept the car until 1974, and part exchanged it for an Escort. My grandad swapped his Minx for an Imp in 1969.

My mate’s dad bought a black Marina on a ‘K’ plate from L&P (even though it was an Austin dealer), and oddly my Yamaha bike key fitted in the ignition! Mum was manager at the Odeon cinema and we lived in Blackhall. I still remember the Corporation bus with Santa on top every Christmas! I’ve had a Hunter and a couple of Avengers, maintaining the family Hillman link. Good luck to Nick with the Minx, ace motors. Chris Gray, Smart Alloy Yorkshire
