Look for cor­ro­sion around the shock ab­sorber mount­ings at the rear be­cause they can tear out com­pletely, and check for bro­ken coil springs and per­ished bushes. The steer­ing was never es­pe­cially sharp but a worn steer­ing box ex­ac­er­bates any vague­ness, and it’s worth check­ing for leaks from the power as­sis­tance hy­draulics and steer­ing damper; the lat­ter is around £85 on­line. Noisy wheel bear­ings are a known is­sue, and a com­plete over­haul of worn and ne­glected brakes isn’t cheap. ABS ar­rived in 1989 and you’ll want to be cer­tain that the warn­ing light il­lu­mi­nates and ex­tin­guishes cor­rectly on start-up.
