FUNCTIONING 4X4
The four-wheel drive system – parttime on W460s – is reliable if used regularly but look for oil leaks from the transfer box, differentials and front hubs, and listen out for groans or clunks. Check the operation of the hydraulically-operated diff locks (they were electrically-controlled on W463s), while early examples also have a number of grease nipples that need regular attention. Both manual and automatic gearboxes need regular oil changes; the former suffers from worn synchromesh on second and third gears. A sloppy gearshift is likely just worn nylon bushes (around £100 to replace), but sorting an ailing automatic is costly so ensure gear-changes are smooth.
