WATCH FOR ROT

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Buying & Selling -

Despite its ruggedness, the G-Wagen isn’t immune from corrosion, and major repairs are ruinously expensive. The rear of the bodywork needs particular scrutiny, concentrating on the rear wings, wheel arches and quarter panels; if the latter are bad rot can spread to the tailgate pillars so make doubly sure that the panel doesn’t sag when opened. Other grot spots include the front wings, sills, and around the rear lights and fuel filler neck. Bear in mind that original Mercedes panels are pricey – a front wing is around £400, for example – and pattern parts rarely fit well.
