Alex bought his 1987 Volvo 340 seven years ago, as a keen entrant in road rallies. ‘I’ve fitted a Renault F7P 1.8-litre 16-valve engine with a multi-layer steel head gasket. The ride height is standard but at the front there’s a thicker anti-roll bar, stiffer springs and adjustable dampers while at the back there are coilovers. The Volvo is a great alternative to an Escort MkII as it handles better and is much more affordable; my car owes me just £1500 plus the £300 purchase cost. These cars are so predictable and confidence-inspiring to drive at the limit when the suspension and brakes are sorted. And speaking of the latter, harder brake pads are all you need if you’re doing any motorsport – the rest is fine as it is.’
