5 WAYS TO MAKE IT BETTER

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Buying & Selling -

1 IGNITION

The contacts and condensers are generally poorly made, so it’s worth fitting electronic ignition. You can buy a kit for less than £100, which will give better starting and more reliable running.

2 RUSTPROOFING

Unless a Mini is completely restored and comprehensively rustproofed at the same time, corrosion is guaranteed. Rustproofing annually with Dinitrol is key to keeping rust at bay.

3 EXHAUST

On a standard car a good exhaust can liberate 3-4bhp while also creating a more purposeful sound. There are loads of mild and stainless steel systems available, and tubular manifolds.

4 FUELLING

It’s worth fitting twin SUs for more consistent fuelling across the cylinders, to give more even running and some extra power. Alternatively a Weber 28/36DCD could be fitted.

5 BREATHING

The standard 848cc and 998cc heads struggle to breathe. Porting and polishing can increase power by 30%, with the correct needle in the standard carb.
