WHY I LOVE MY MG ZR

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Buying & Selling - ROGER PARKER

As the technical officer for the MG Owners’ Club, Roger knows these cars well, having owned each of the Z models over the years. ‘I remember following this ZR being built at the factory when we bought it new in 2004. I’d sold some other cars to fund the purchase of a ZT260 so this one was for my wife, and although she now has a newer car, it was too good to sell so I kept it for myself to use. It’s a daily driver that’s still only covered 65,000 miles and we chose the 120 model over the more powerful 160 as there is still plenty of performance on offer in day-to-day driving. Plus, it’s less complicated and cheaper to insure. A slight but continuous coolant loss at around 45,000 miles meant I changed the head gasket as a precaution, swapping to the updated multi-layer item, and it’s been trouble-free ever since. I’ve also added a stainless steel exhaust system with an X-Power twin-pipe rear silencer which improves the cosmetics and lasts much longer. Both the ZR and ZS are great value for money, so it’s a shame that so many have disappeared over the years.’
