‘ The legend grows’ was Jaguar’s launch slogan for the XJ6 Series 3. Some wags suggested that the ‘growing’ actually applied to owners’ overdrafts and repair bills. We’ve always loved the XJ6, but viewed it as a deeply desirable but tricky to own masterpiece. Yet if looked after, an XJ6 S3 can be a reliable machine. Maintenance doesn’t have to cost a fortune and specialist and club support is considerable. As always, buy the best car you can afford and get a marque expert to give it the once-over before you part with any money. Bag a good one, and you’ll have a car that’s practical, refined, luxurious and powerful and blessed with a chassis that’s adept at comfortable wafting as it is hammering along B-roads. It’s the consummate all-rounder.
