The XJ6 is shown to the public in September, and garners almost hysterical praise, initially in 2.8- and 4.2-litre form. Most is new, but the preceding MkX’s rear suspension is retained and adapted.
5343cc XJ12 offering 253bhp is launched just in time for the early 1970s fuel crisis. It manages around 12mpg before improvements.
Series 2 is launched with different bumpers, grilles and interiors. A two-door coupé joins the range in 1975 and the long wheelbase versions become standard the same year.
The Series 3 takes to the stage with Pininfarinatweaked styling revisions, including a larger glass area, raised rear roofline and alterations to the bumpers, grille and interior.
