XJ6 time­line

1968

The XJ6 is shown to the pub­lic in Septem­ber, and gar­ners al­most hys­ter­i­cal praise, ini­tially in 2.8- and 4.2-litre form. Most is new, but the pre­ced­ing MkX’s rear sus­pen­sion is re­tained and adapted.

1972

5343cc XJ12 of­fer­ing 253bhp is launched just in time for the early 1970s fuel cri­sis. It man­ages around 12mpg be­fore im­prove­ments.

1973

Se­ries 2 is launched with dif­fer­ent bumpers, grilles and in­te­ri­ors. A two-door coupé joins the range in 1975 and the long wheel­base ver­sions be­come stan­dard the same year.

1979

The Se­ries 3 takes to the stage with Pin­in­far­i­natweaked styling re­vi­sions, in­clud­ing a larger glass area, raised rear roofline and al­ter­ations to the bumpers, grille and in­te­rior.
