5 WAYS TO MAKE IT BETTER

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Buying & Selling -

1 KEEP IT COOL

The cooling system can struggle to cope, so it’s worth fitting a second electric fan to the radiator – although automatics got a second fan as standard.

2 FIT NEW WHEELS

Some Ambassadors came with steel wheels. It’s possible to fit Princess or later Ambassador alloy items, but use the correct fixings or grief is guaranteed.

3 CLEAN THE SUNROOF

A sunroof was an option on the Vanden Plas, but the drainage tubes get blocked. To keep them clear, stick in a piece of wire regularly and carefully wiggle it about.

4 FIX THE THERMOSTAT

The thermostat fuses into its housing on the O-Series engine, which breaks the housing. Replacements are virtually unobtainable now, so every six months, dismantle and reassemble the whole thing.

5 MEND THE STRUTS

The tailgate and bonnet are held up by gas struts which lose their springiness. At the first sign of this spend a few quid with SGS Engineering on replacements.
