1977 MG MIDGET 1500

Did I have fun? My car had 114,331 miles on it, following the California epic. I did 220 miles in it in a single day – a personal best. It was slightly concerning on the way to the starting point to hear a strange whistling noise coming from the hood (which was up at that point). I thought a seal had gone, only to discover that I hadn’t latched the passenger door properly. I drove the rest of the way hood down – bloomin’ cold, but I added a scarf, baseball cap and gloves to my usual jeans, hoodie and fake Wayfarer shades. For a car that’s better suited to B-road blasts, I was amazed at how well it coped as a long-distance cruiser – perfectly happy at a constant 70mph, and much quieter with the hood down than up. It behaved impeccably throughout, too – not always a given. The endless dual carriageways were a bit boring, but it soon found its stride on the twisty back lanes in convoy with the two MX-5s and Richard’s Panda, all going flat-out. It took a fair bit to keep up with them – I don’t think the Midget was amused.
