Memories of two motor racing gents
was reminded, seeing the photo on page five of CCW, 5 April that one of my first jobs in motor racing was helping to re-assemble cars for the May 1981 meeting at Brands Hatch that celebrated John Surtees’s achievements.
At a firm in Milton Keynes, which his former mechanic Alan Jakeman helped to run, the then very incomplete Team Surtees TS5 in the picture was to ‘benefit’ from my various inspirations on missing fabricated items! I spotted my rear wing end plates in the picture which are sadly nothing like the originals, and the new blue driver’s windscreen that replaced a broken one that ended up re-purposed on my Yamaha YB100. Mr Surtees would turn up in his blue Ferrari to inspect the work and argue over the bill, never wasting an unnecessary word. Sadly while we were working on Mike Hailwood’s Team Surtees TS14 we heard of the accident in which he and his daughter died and his son was badly injured.
RIP to two unique gentlemen.
Trying the seat for size.
