The orig­i­nal rope-style rear oil seal is prone to leaks which is why FD own­ers fit a lip seal. No ma­chin­ing is in­volved, but as it’s an en­gine-out job and the crank­shaft has to be re­moved. Usu­ally done as part of an en­gine re­build.
