Carry on campering

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - This Week -

I loved the Bedford CA Dormobile vs Volkswagen Camper feature ( CCW, 12 April). It brought back memories of my family’s beloved Dormobile on holidays and picnic trips in the 1960s and in particular the smell of those leather seats with the odd whiff of damp and petrol thrown in for good measure!

We used to drive along with those sliding doors open and, as the feature states, they are not the fastest vehicles on the road, but it seemed that there were far fewer people in such a steaming hurry as there are today.

While I can’t remember the year of our van, it was definitely one of the early ones with the porthole window on either side at the back.

My brother, Clive, and I used to clamber up to use the narrow beds in the lifting roof section – until we got too big to fit in them, at any rate – but by then we were less keen on going away with our parents anyway. Happy days! Chris Wilson, Matlock, Derbyshire
