1975 Volvo 244DL
Volvo’s 200 series certainly turned heads in period with its chiselled, blatantly safety conscious frontal styling, but despite the Swedish maker’s famous anti-corrosion treatments, early cars aren’t a common sight. ACA’s car had lasted well and had just 70,000 miles on the clock. The body and (very orange) paint were good, with the door bottoms showing no sign of the bubbling that can set in. Bonnet and doors closed as if the car was new, and a look inside confirmed how well built these cars were. The seat facings, in an unusual shade of green, had lasted very well, there were no cracks in the dashboard and entertinment was provided by an original-fit 8-track player. A big, bright, cheerful and reliable buy – the punter who waited until the sale’s end was well rewarded – and for less than £3000.
