Clear road ahead
I thought you might be interested in the view of the Preston Bypass (M6), Britain’s first motorway stretch, which opened in December 1958.
The photo was taken in 1959 through the windscreen of my father’s 1956 Morris Minor as we were on our way to Scotland. We used to travel every year from Frome 420 miles to see grandparents in Aberfoyle. On one occasion we were snowed in at a café in Shap overnight until a snow plough opened up the road. The way it was – no traffic problems on the newly opened Preston Bypass.
