Mercedes-Benz W115 250CE

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Drive-it Day Special The 50 Greatest Drives - Giles chapman

By reputation, the W114 carries a built-like-a-tank stigma that some classic car folk like to chortle about. But as an everyday car around London, I absolutely loved my 250CE, and superbly well suited to the daily task it was too – especially with all the windows wound down in fully pillarless mode, and my right arm resting lazily on the door top. This Merc is a handsome car, and I make no apology for enjoying seeing its dark red dopplegänger cruising alongside me… in passing shop windows, sunlight glinting on its abundant chrome. But much as it was happy sailing along the Bayswater Road, the automatic gearbox and perfectly-weighted power steering relaxed and unstressed, the sewing-machine din from the straight six would take on a background snarl if pressed. Cool.
