British Leyland Princess 2200

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Drive-it Day Special The 50 Greatest Drives - Richard Gunn

This might be regarded as a bit of a wild-card entry, so I’d better explain. Whatever the faults and foibles of British Leyland’s ‘Wedge’ range, either real or perceived, they are wonderful cars when they are working properly. This is particularly true of the six-cylinder versions. They have a lazy, wafting quality where the power comes in smooth, rolling waves in response to your right foot while the Hydragas suspension gives a magic carpet ride that soaks up bumps and cossets occupants. Couple this with the front-wheel drive that allows accurate aiming and you’re left with a big car that outperforms its contemporaries in almost every department.
