Plan your journey carefully to avoid delays and keep an eye out for roadworks – the shortest route isn’t always the most fuel efficient one.

Make sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressures before you set off – it’ll make a big difference to how much fuel you use.

Try to resist opening the windows or running the air conditioning, both of which will shave at least 10 per cent off the fuel economy.

Stick to 60mph rather than 70mph on motorways and dual carriageways – it’ll be kinder to your classic and will help to bring the mpg up.

Maintain a safe gap between your car and the car in front, particularly in busy traffic – you’ll find that you brake and accelerate less as a result, which in turn helps to conserve fuel.
