Alfa Romeo Alfasud

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Drive-it Day Special The 50 Greatest Drives - Richard Heseltine

It’s hard to pinpoint when Alfa Romeo made its last truly great car. The ’Sud isn’t a candidate, but it has credentials. First seen in 1971, with the Sprint variant remaining on sale as late as 1989, it looked crisp, had a characterful ‘Boxer’ engine and chuckable handling. It’s just that it dissolved faster than Alka-Seltzer. Get past that, and it’s not hard to love this little buzz-bomb. It feels like an oversized Mini Cooper, and the sound of the flatfour up front is bound to make you giggle. The shame is that Alfa hasn’t made anything remotely like it since.
