As a suc­ces­sor to a Mor­ris Mi­nor 1000, my Citroën GS Pal­las came as a real rev­e­la­tion with its front-wheel drive and all-round disc brakes. Not only did that self-lev­el­ling hy­drop­neu­matic sus­pen­sion give an in­cred­i­bly smooth ride, but rais­ing it to its high­est set­ting en­abled the car to ne­go­ti­ate a flooded Fen­land road on one oc­ca­sion. The 1.2-litre flat-four air-cooled en­gine may have been rather un­der­pow­ered, but it man­aged to move that gor­geous fast­back sa­loon shape around well enough and the great­look­ing in­te­rior was ex­tremely com­fort­able on long jour­neys. The Pal­las side rub­bing strips and hub­caps added yet an­other touch of class. One that got away…
