Chevrolet Corvette C1
The chrome-laden 1958-60 Corvette C1 models really are something special, with looks that achieve that rare combination of achingly pretty and athletic. With its oneyear-only ‘washboard’ bonnet and chrome boot strakes, the ’58 tops the lot. Sure, later Corvettes may drive better, but I really fell for the ’58 I drove recently. Even in low-rent form with a 230bhp 4.6-litre V8 engine and two-speed auto, it felt like the right place to be. The low-revving V8 just pulls and pulls and the competent and forgiving suspension allows you to chuck it around with genuine enthusiasm and no fear that it will bite back. And boy, does it attract a lot of attention.
