Ford Escort MkI

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Drive-it Day Special The 50 Greatest Drives - Giles Chapman

Back in 1995 I decided to buy a car for £100 and see how far it would get me, in order to write a funny newspaper story. The first working candidate I came across was a 25-year old Escort MkI four-door automatic. For more than 3500 miles, it was almost uncannily trustworthy, the 1.3-litre engine starting eagerly and the clunky self-shifter dithering on the slightest incline as to what gear it needed. Being light and well balanced, it was a treat to drive – a blip of acceleration soon got the tail out on slippery roundabouts. Great fun.
