Triumph TR5

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Drive-it Day Special The 50 Greatest Drives - Mike Le Caplain

For many marque aficionados, the TR5 is the sweet-spot of the Triumph TR range, mustering as it does the the preceding TR4/ TR4A’s gorgeous Michelotti-penned styling, but with the additional thump of a vocal 2.5-litre straight-six that was deemed good enough to power the later Kamm-tailed TR6.

And it’s that thug-in-a-John-Phillips suit combination that makes it so wonderful to drive. To the uninitiated, it’s just another handsome old car dripping with chrome. But plant the throttle at the traffic lights and chances are you’ll scare the life out of the spotty oik in the hot hatch alongside you as you disappear off into the distance.
