Aston Martin V8 Vantage Le Mans

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Drive-it Day Special The 50 Greatest Drives - Richard Gunn

‘Ordinary’ Virages were powerful enough – but to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Aston Martin’s Le Mans victory plus the end of the Virage chassis, 40 special Le Mans versions were built between 1999 and 2000.

I tried one of these 600bhp twin supercharged rockets and it was extreme. Despite being a big, heavy machine, in any gear, its ability to launch itself at the horizon was phenomenal, almost frightening in its intensity and responsiveness. No car I’ve driven before or since has created such an impression of outright brutal velocity. And the handling? Who knows or really cares? I never came anywhere close to reaching its limits.
