Austin A35

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Drive-it Day Special The 50 Greatest Drives - Nick Larkin

Cute, chubby and friendly looking, the Austin A35 is great fun to drive, but hurl it wildly into bends like a Mini and you’re likely be viewing the world from upside down.

The cars have a willing and eager feel, though, with a good gearchange and plenty of pep for town driving from the 948cc A-series engine. You cruise at 55-60mph happily too, but the rod-controlled brakes can teach you the meaning of the words ‘anticipation’ and, if they’re not properly set up, ‘accident’. There’s loads of understeer and body roll, plus not the smoothest of rides, but all this genuinely is, at least most of the time, a fun challenge to master.
